Michael Kinnear was a Melbourne based but internationally respected and celebrated discographer of early gramophone recordings of Hindustani music .

Clifford Hocking presented his first program of musicians from India in October 1961 with a tour by Sharan Rani (sarod) and Chatur Lal (tabla), Over the following four decades, Clifford Hocking brought many great Hindustani musicians to Australia including Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar and many others.

Mohindar Dhillion organised and presented many musicians and dancers in Australia through his Spirit of India tours from the mid 1980s to 2018.

Many individuals and organisations have contributed to developing a community of practice of Hindustani Music in Melbourne over the last few decades. Ashok Kumar Roy (1936-2007) a senior student of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan was an outstanding performer on the sarod and inspiring teacher. He made a tremendous contribution to the development of Hindustani music in Melbourne and the rest of Australia for 30 years.
